“Suppose
someone sees you, who have the knowledge, sitting eating in the temple of some
false god, do you not think that his conscience, vulnerable as it is, may be
encouraged to eat foods dedicated to false gods? And then it would be through
your knowledge that this brother for whom Christ died, vulnerable as he is, has
been lost. So, sinning against your brothers and wounding their vulnerable
consciences, you would be sinning against Christ…” (1 Cor.8:10-13).
When we eat
anywhere and anyhow, dress and undress anywhere and anyhow, sing anywhere and
anyhow, drink (wine/alcohol) anyhow and anywhere, speak anyhow or anywhere,
visualize (watch anyhow movies or gaze at peoples nakedness) anyhow or anywhere,
reason anywhere or anyhow, take actions (in
office/school/home/church/market/streets/shops/road-driving) without
considering its impact on others; we may be luring other people into temptation
and sin forgetting that many souls have been destined for trials but woe to him
through whom it comes {‘The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scripture
say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! Better
for that man if he had never been born!’ Mtt.26:24} and “but anyone who is the
downfall of one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown
into the sea with a great millstone hung round his neck” (Mk.9:42).
This does not
give us the opportunity to be judgmental in approach, looks and opinion rather
we should try as much as possible to excuse each other as well as have a word
of comfort for all hence when we encounter people in these environments and we
are free/less busy (‘act wisely with outsiders, making the best of the present
time’ Col.4:5) we should admonish them with love (‘though I command languages
both human and angelic – if I speak without love, I am no more than a gong booming
or a cymbal clashing…’ 1 Cor.13.1-8) on how to stop these habits or reduce them
where it is not sin to do them at all thus “never repeat what you are told and
you will come to no harm; whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it,
unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it” [Sirach 19:7-9] and ‘for me
everything is permissible; maybe, but not everything does good. True, for me
everything is permissible but I am determined not to be dominated by anything’
(1 Cor.6:12).
